How long does a humanoid robot work before it has to charge? Erlangen: three numbers from one test

Humanoid tested its HMND 01 Alpha in logistics at Siemens' electronics factory in Erlangen, where the robot moved totes. Humanoid says the robot met all of the test's target metrics, and it published three of them: 60 tote moves an hour, uptime of more than 8 hours, and autonomous pick-and-place success above 90% (April 16, 2026).

The uptime decides whether one robot holds the station through a shift or a second one takes over while the first charges.

Digit 5: a short charge after a short run

Agility Robotics published the specification of Digit 5 on September 15, 2026: a battery that runs for 90 minutes and charges in 9, for more than 20 hours of work in a 24-hour day.

A charge cycle like that shapes the station plan differently from a long run. The robot leaves the station for short, regular breaks through the day, so the work waiting for it has to hold for those minutes, and the charger has to sit close enough to the station for the walk to stay short.

Hours at customer sites

Agility says its Digit 4 humanoids have logged more than 65,000 hours of operation across customer sites in North America, including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, after nearly three years of commercial deployment (September 15, 2026). At GXO's Flowery Branch facility near Atlanta, it reports a cumulative 100,000 totes at about 98% accuracy while on task.

Figure reports that its Figure 02 deployment at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg ran 10-hour shifts, Monday to Friday, for 11 months, and logged more than 1,250 hours of runtime (November 19, 2025).

Four questions behind an uptime figure

When a maker quotes an uptime figure for a pilot on your floor, four questions tie it to your shift.

  • What counts as uptime: the hours the robot was at the station and able to work, or the hours it was working.
  • Where charging happens: at the station, at a charger the robot walks to, or by a battery swap.
  • What happens after a stop: whether the robot recovers on its own or a person restarts it, and how long that takes.
  • What the robot does while it waits for work, since a station that runs dry lowers the count with no fault in the robot.

Reading uptime against your own shift

An operations adviser asked on LinkedIn in September whether customer pilots track completed work per shift, including charging and recovery time, since that makes the benefit easier to compare with an existing workflow. The figures above give that comparison its units: moves an hour, hours of uptime, hours of operation and shifts worked.

At your own station, uptime is counted the way work is counted there today. Keep a log of the hours the robot works and the hours it charges, and note every stop that needs a person to restart it. Set beside the station's current rate and your shift pattern, that log shows whether one robot covers the shift or two share it.
